What is blood cancer?

Blood cancer is a term that describes several different types of cancer that affect the blood cells. Most blood cancers begin in the bone marrow, the spongy material inside the bones, where new blood cells are produced. Blood cancer affects the production and function of blood cells.

Wherever he went, he made people’s lives better: Gwyn’s story

People with Down’s Syndrome have a much higher risk of developing leukaemia. Gwyn Jones, 56, from Greater Manchester, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) after showing unusual fatigue. His diagnosis was a shock, given his previously active and social life. Gwyn’s sister, Ann, fondly remembers their close bond and his vibrant personality. She now shares his story to raise awareness about the increased risk of leukaemia in people with Down’s Syndrome, hoping it will help others recognize symptoms earlier.

The power of positivity: Ruth’s story

Ruth Wake, an active runner from Staffordshire, was stunned to be diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) after a routine health check, despite feeling perfectly healthy. Now undergoing treatment, including a stem cell transplant from umbilical cord blood, Ruth is determined to raise awareness about this vital donation and looks forward to returning to her sports, aiming to compete in the 2025 Transplant Games.
