Why 250,000 steps?

You may be wondering why we have chosen to ask you to take 250,000 steps this May. Well it's because in the UK there are currently circa 250,000 people living with blood cancer in the UK.

Every step you take will be for one person currently going through treatment in hospital, managing their condition at home, spending time with loved ones or receiving the amazing news, that they have beat blood cancer.

Step up Challenge: FAQ

Q. What is the Step up Challenge?

A. This new and exciting challenge is a ‘do it your own way’ event, where we ask you to take 250,000 steps over a month period. How and where you do it is completely up to you, as long as you complete the overall steps between 1-31 May 2021.

Q. I just signed up, now what?

A.  Firstly, join the Facebook group we set up for this challenge. Click ‘Join Group‘. Once you’re in, you can register for your free headbandset up your Facebook fundraiser, get tips, be inspired and find out anything you want to know about the challenge! The Facebook group will be monitored between 8.30am and 8.30pm

Q. What is the registration fee?

A. There is no registration fee, it is free to take part!

Q. How much do I need to raise?

A. We encourage everyone taking part to raise as much as possible. Every penny raised via Facebook comes directly to Leukaemia UK and will help fund world-class research and care, to improve the lives of families affected by leukaemia and blood cancer.

If you raise a £50 or more you will receive your free Leukaemia UK t-shirt - to wear with pride on your next walk!

Q. Will I get anything in return for taking on this challenge?

Everyone will receive a challenge pack which will include a step calendar with 10,000 increments and a pack of stickers to tick them off as you go along. Those who raise £50 or more will also get a Leukaemia UK t-shirt.

Q. How do I raise money?

A. Facebook fundraisers are the easiest way to raise money. You can set one up in a few seconds by following this link. It’s really easy to share the page with your Facebook friends. Don’t forget to include 'I'm taking 250,000 steps in May' in the title of your fundraising page and set the end date to June 1st or later (otherwise your page will close after just 14 days).

Q. Where will my friends’ money go?

A. Directly to Leukaemia UK to help fund life-saving research and care. Once you start receiving sponsorship in your Facebook fundraiser, Facebook will automatically send the funds to us!

Q. What if I set up two fundraisers by mistake?

A. Ideally you woulonly have one fundraiser open for the challenge. You can delete, or hide fundraisers using the three dots when logged in to Facebook and on your fundraiser’s page. Alternatively, change the end date so one of the fundraisers closes much earlier so you can focus your fundraising into one. Don’t worry, if your page has donations on it, as all your donations on either page will still come to Leukaemia UK.

Q. What happens if donations don’t appear on my fundraiser straight away?

A. We have found that normally when donations don’t appear on your fundraiser page, they will do within 48 hours or more if the donation was made over the weekend. However, if your donation hasn’t appeared and it has been longer than this there a few different possibilities.

  • Donations from other countries can take a lot longer to come through to Facebook and then to Leukaemia UK, this can be as much as weeks!
  • The donation didn’t go through, has the money left your donors account? Please ask them to check.
  • PayPal takes up to 3 days to register onto your Facebook Fundraiser.
  • Your sponsor didn’t actually donate to your fundraising page, but instead clicked the ‘donate now’ button which links to Leukaemia UK directly. It is an easy mistake to make but means the money will not show up on your Facebook fundraiser but will be sent directly to us as a donation. Ask your sponsor to check the receipt they were emailed directly from Facebook, this will say whether they donated to your Facebook fundraiser, or straight to Leukaemia UK.

If the problem persists then please email [email protected]  with the full name, email address and donation amount of each of your missing sponsors and we can do some extra investigation our end.

Q. How can I send in sponsorship money I’ve collected offline?

A. The easiest way to get cash donations to Leukaemia UK is by donating to yourself through your Facebook fundraiser.

Please send cheques with a note explaining that you raised the money for 'Take 250,000 steps this May' to Leukaemia UK at the following address:

Leukaemia UK, 52 Portland Place, London, W1B 1NH. If you would prefer to make a bank transfer then please email [email protected] for the appropriate details.

Q. How do I record my steps?

A. You will receive a step calendar in your challenge pack with 10,000 step increments, once you hit each one you can add a sticker to them to show you have reached that goal. You can record your steps on apps such as Strava or Fitbit or if you have a smart watch you can measure your steps on there.

Q. What if I don’t complete the challenge?

A. The only thing that matters is that you challenge yourself and enjoy helping raise awareness and funds for Leukaemia UK. Do as much as you can! Every time you are active and post about your challenge, you will help Leukaemia UK fund more life-saving research and care.

Q. I have joined the group and requested a pack but it hasn’t arrived yet, how long does it usually take?

A. Challenge packs will start to be sent from the 19th April, and are likely to take around 5 working days to arrive. If it has been more than 7 working days since you registered for a challenge pack then please email [email protected] and we will look into it for you.

Q. Can I start early or late?

A. Of course! May is when our Facebook group is active and the majority of people are likely to take part, however we recommend doing this at a time convenient for you. The more challenge participants we have, the more we can fund ground-breaking leukaemia and blood cancer research.

Q. Can I do more or less steps than on the calendar, or jog, run?

A. Absolutely, this is your challenge and you can tailor it to suit you!

Q. If I get injured, what do I do?

A. Injuries are unfortunately always a possibility in any challenge. It is very important that you seek professional medical advice if you are in pain or fall during the challenge. Please see a doctor or call 111 if you are unsure about what to do.
